Workshop Description: Physical cosmology is currently organized around the Big Bang Theory. According to this theory the Universe began in an arbitrarily hot and dense state and has been expanding and cooling ever since. This talk will review the basic predictions of and evidence for the Big Bang Theory. Moreover, in the modern cosmological model ordinary matter makes up only ~5 percent of the content of the Universe, with the remaining being composed of ~23 percent Dark Matter and ~72 percent Dark Energy. This talk will review the evidence for Dark Matter, its basic properties, and ongoing experimental efforts to discover the Dark Matter particle.
